U.S. Urges Central and Eastern Europe to Prioritize Energy Independence Over Net-Zero Approach

Energy Independence

At the Three Seas Business Forum held on Monday in Warsaw, U.S. Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, urged Central and Eastern European nations to adopt an approach different from transitioning to a net-zero economy. According to Wright, the costly climate policies adopted by Western Europe have hindered economic growth and favored foreign companies, warning that the region should not follow that path.

“Central Europe Is at a Crossroads”

During his speech, Wright stressed the need for Central European countries to prioritize “energy freedom” and citizens’ prosperity. He criticized net-zero emission policies, viewing them as harmful. “We invite you to join us in pursuing Energy Freedom and Prosperity,” he stated. Wright urged countries to reject policies hindering growth.

U.S. Withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement

Under former President Trump’s administration, the U.S. began withdrawing from the 2015 Paris Agreement to combat global warming. New policies focused on expanding coal mining and boosting oil and gas production. These actions replaced the global climate pact. Trump’s approach shifted the nation’s energy priorities significantly.

Climate Change Is Not the “Most Urgent Global Priority”

Wright acknowledged climate change as a real phenomenon but argued it’s not the “most urgent issue” worldwide. The Secretary of Energy stated economic studies show the 2050 zero-emissions goal is unattainable. He argued that this goal is causing more harm than climate change. Wright emphasized focusing on other pressing global challenges.

Trump Advocates for Purchasing U.S. Energy

Former President Donald Trump repeatedly urged Europe to purchase more energy products from the U.S. to avoid potential tariffs. This move aimed to enhance Europe’s energy independence. Trump’s strategy focused on reducing Europe’s reliance on other energy sources. He emphasized the economic benefits of closer energy ties with the U.S.

Expansion of Nuclear Energy in Poland

Wright’s visit to Poland coincided with U.S. companies Westinghouse Electric Co. and Bechtel Group Corp. extending their contract. The extension covers Poland’s first nuclear plant, marking a significant energy milestone. Westinghouse plans to establish reactors in additional regions. This expansion highlights the growing nuclear energy collaboration between the U.S. and Poland.

Natural Gas and Nuclear Energy as Key Solutions

Wright reaffirmed that the two most significant climate solutions for the coming decades will remain natural gas and nuclear energy. According to him, both are essential because they provide affordable, reliable, and secure energy.
